Assistant Controller | Decatur Cooperative Association

The Decatur Cooperative Association is hiring for an Assistant Controller based out of Oberlin, KS.  The Assistant Controller plays a crucial role in supporting the financial management of the Cooperative. This position will support the accounting department in various administrative and bookkeeping tasks, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in financial record-keeping.  This position offers a competetive salary and benefits package to include: 401(k), medical & dental insurance, health savings account, long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid time off, and retirement plan.

Key Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Review and verify sales tax charges, manage accounts receivable, and oversee tax filing processes.
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of sales and fuel taxes, and manage tax refunds
  • Manage and balance prepaid gas cards, fuel, gas and propane inventories.
  • Manage the daily reconciliation of fuel sales to credit card receivables and ensure accuracy in vendor prepay contracts.
  • Manage employee benefits and payroll processes.
  • Lead efforts to collect past due accounts, reconciling customer accounts, and ensure accuracy in customer statements.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of bank accounts, credit card accounts, and other financial records.
  • Ensure compliance with sales tax, fuel tax, and tax exemption regulations.
  • Assist the CFO with preparation of monthly financial reports and oversee month-end closing tasks.
  • Collaborate with the CFO in training and developing location clerks on financial processes, including daily deposits, transfers, and fuel ticket management.
  • Utilize Agtrax/Agris and other accounting software for advanced financial management and reporting.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate by verbal and written means with customers, employees and management.
  • Maintain positive customer relations by resolving customer complaints and/or directing the customer to the appropriate person for resolution.
  • Respond promptly to customer needs, answers questions, and meet commitments Manage multiple priorities.
  • Exhibit strong leadership skills and manage difficult or emotional situations.
  • Encourage teamwork and successfully communicate with various departments.
  • Understand and comply with all state and federal regulations.
  • Present a clean and professional appearance.
  • Employee is required to perform all other duties as assigned by the CFO or General Manager.

Qualifications:

  • An associate’s degree in accounting or a related field is required, or a high school diploma with a minimum of two years of relevant accounting experience. Candidates should also be willing to pursue additional continuing education, seminars, classes, or other job-related learning opportunities as needed.
  • Extensive experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office products and advanced accounting/payroll software
  • Valid Driver’s License
